Genesia Ventures Makes Follow-on Investment in Beff, a Platform Digitalizing Battery Manufacturing
Genesia Ventures has made a follow-on investment in the Series A round of Beff, provider of a platform for digitalizing battery development and manufacturing processes.
Investment Background
The battery industry has historically been driven by a mass-production, low-cost model led primarily by large Asian manufacturers. However, as technologies diversify and countries increasingly seek to localize their supply chains in response to economic security risks, the industry is undergoing a major structural shift toward high-efficiency, localized production of a wider variety of products.
A serious obstacle amid this transition is the dependence of manufacturing expertise on individual experience and tacit knowledge, compounded by a shortage of engineers. Battery manufacturers are struggling to improve production yields and face significant material waste during manufacturing. At the same time, although battery-material technologies evolve rapidly, the large capital investments required for production mean that ramping up mass production often takes a long time — creating a fundamental structural contradiction.
Beff is building infrastructure that transforms tacit knowledge from manufacturing sites into data, preserves it for future generations, and advances battery development and manufacturing processes. At the heart of Beff’s business is the founders’ deep, hands-on expertise: Kodai Nagano worked on electric-vehicle battery development at Nissan Motor before leading all-solid-state battery technology development at Toyota Motor, while Shunsuke Amagai worked on electrical systems and battery-pack development at Nissan Motor before taking on responsibilities at Mercedes-Benz in Germany spanning advanced battery-pack development to the establishment of strategic partnerships.
Business Overview
Beff is a startup developing a proprietary platform that combines its Virtual Factory Platform (VFP) and Real Factory Platform (RFP) to create a core operating system for battery manufacturing. With the ambition of becoming the “Arm of the battery industry,” the company is building infrastructure that digitalizes the entire process from battery development through mass-production validation.
- Beff Navigator (VFP): Beff Navigator is software powered by proprietary analytical models. It integrates the complex information required for battery development — including material data, design drawings, evaluation conditions, and measurement results — significantly shortening development lead times.
- Real Factory Platform (RFP): The Real Factory Platform provides a collaborative environment for developing next-generation batteries, centered on Beff’s own laboratory. By using parameters such as manufacturing conditions and inspection results to digitalize processes that have traditionally depended on individual expertise, the platform supports the early identification of manufacturing issues and the prevention of defects.
Beff’s core business is a battery-data-driven operating system that integrates these two platforms.
Use of Funds and Future Outlook
The funds raised in this round will be used for the following initiatives:
- Strengthening the recruitment of global talent
- Investing in and expanding Beff’s in-house laboratory
- Accelerating the development of platform capabilities
- Strengthening the company’s customer support organization
Going forward, Beff will expand its platform capabilities, enhance its in-house laboratory, and accelerate global expansion, further strengthening its integrated hardware-and-software development infrastructure. The company aims to establish its platform as the standard infrastructure for the battery industry.
About the Investment
Shu Sokabe, Investment Manager, Genesia Ventures
As electrification and the energy transition continue, the performance requirements and applications of batteries will become increasingly diverse. The ability to rapidly bring new materials and designs into practical use will therefore become increasingly important.
At the same time, there is a significant gap between achieving excellent battery performance in a laboratory and producing batteries reliably at scale. We expect a substantial supply-demand gap to emerge as production technologies and mass-manufacturing expertise struggle to keep pace with the speed of demand growth and technological innovation.
Beff’s strength lies in its ability to accumulate production knowledge spanning materials, processes, and quality, and to apply that knowledge to subsequent development. As the number of projects grows, so too will its knowledge and data, improving the accuracy of both development and mass production. We believe this structure creates a significant competitive advantage, which led us to make this investment.
